Oleta Slaughter Wallen, 82, of China Spring died Wednesday, Jan 6, 1999 at a local hospital. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8 at China Spring Cemetery with her grandson, the Rev. Alvin Slaughter officiating. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors.
Mrs. Wallen was born Jan. 27, 1916 in China Spring, Texas, to Carl and Henrietta Crawford. She was an avid sportswoman and loved hunting and fishing. She loved gardening, flea markets and traveling and was one of the best cooks the Lord ever created. She was active in many civic organizations.
Mrs. Wallen was preceded in death by her sons, Rex Slaughter and Robert Slaughter and infant son Alvin Robert Slaughter, Jr.; her husbands, Alvin Slaughter and Herb Wallen; a sister, Dorothy Talbert; and brothers O. C. Crawford, Loren Crawford and her parents.
She is survived by a daughter, Peggy Cummmings; three sons, Daniel (Bucky)Slaughter and his wife Jacqueline, Don Slaughter and his wife Betty and Ray Slaughter, a daughter-in-law, Fayrene Slaughter; sisters, Wynona Carpenter and Corrine Garrett; a brother, Billy Mac Crawford; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.
Honary pallbearers will be Mrs. Wallen’s grandsons, great-grandsons and her great-grandsons-in-law.
Memorials may be made to the China Spring Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Department.
