Melissa Lynn (Missey) Simons, the 11-year old China Spring girl diagnosed earlier this year as suffering from an inoperable brain tumor, died Tuesday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in China Spring, Chaplain Jake Riemenschneider and the Rev. Bob Wimberly officiating.  Burial will be in China Spring Cemetery.

Missey, the daughter of  McLennan County Sheriff’s Deputy Billy Simons and Mrs. Simons, was  hospitalized over the weekend for treatment of double pneumonia, Sheriff’s Department Capt. Dan Weyenberg said.  She died from complication resulting from pneumonia, he added.

The tumor was diagnosed in late February or early March at a Houston hospital, and Missey had been undergoing treatment  since.  She was living at home with her parents until she was hospitalized last weekend, Weyenberg said.

Missey was born Nov. 28, 1970, in Waco.  She attended China Spring schools and was a member of First Baptist Church of China Spring and the Girl’s Auxilliary.

Survivors include her parents, her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Brown of 2321 Gurley and Mrs. Helen Simons and Roy (Bill) Simons, both of Waco; a sister, Kimberly Rae Simons of China Spring and two brothers, John Simons and Billy Simons, Jr., both of China Spring.

The family has designated the American Cancer Society and the Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Hospital for memorials.
