Carroll E. (Gene) Cannon, 69, a retired Veterans Administration Medical Center died Tuesday in a local hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Wilkirson-Hatch Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Richard Reed and the Rev. John Beckling, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in China Spring Cemetery.
Mr. Cannon was born July 11, 1922 in China Spring and moved to Waco at the age of 6. He graduated from Waco High and Four C Business College and played in the championship Waco High School band under Lyle Skinner. He married Wincie I. Evans on September 12, 1947.
Mr. Cannon was discharged as a staff sergeant after serving in Italy during World War II. His Army Air Corps squadron received the Presidential Citation while it was there. Mr. Cannon organized and was the first president of AFGE Local 1822. He retired in 1982 from the VA Medical Center in Waco, where he worked for 40 years.
He was a member of Lake Shore United Methodist Church where he was a choir member and held other offices.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Carolyn Jean Sorrels of Spring; two sons, Donald R. Cannon of Waco and Kenneth Wayne Cannon of Hewitt; four sisters, Pauline Breedlove, Irene Cunningham, Vivian Comer, and Ruie Fetzer; four grandchildren.
