Ralph Edward Conger was born on October 15, 1862, at Oneida, Illinois to Norman H. and Mary A. (Wheeler) Conger. The Conger family moved to Waco in 1870 where he eventually attended Baylor University. Conger received his doctor of medicine degree from Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana. After completing his internship at St. Mary’s Infirmary in Galveston, Texas, he went into practice in the China Spring-Valley Mills-Wortham Bend area. Conger was known in the area for his success in treating pellagra, which is a chronic disease caused by a deficiency of nicotinic acid in the diet.

Conger married Margaret Rogers of Iowa in 1900 and from this union two children were born. Conger died at China Spring on March 1, 1922 and was interred at the China Spring Cemetery.
