Joe Weynand, 81, of China Spring, passed away Tuesday, September 18th at a local hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11AM Saturday, September 22nd at St. Philip Catholic Church located at 13095 Old China Spring Rd. A rosary will be recited 7 PM Friday, September 21st at Lake Shore Funeral home Chapel, 5201 Steinbeck Bend in Waco, with visitation and viewing to follow.

The first born child of Henry and Genevieve Weynand, Joe was the oldest brother to three siblings (Jean, Kenny and Ann). He served his country in the Navy and during that time met his true love Sandy Koster. Through perseverance and determination he won her heart and they married on September 5, 1953. During the fifty-nine years of their marriage came five children (Patti, Sue, Joey, Maria and John), thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Joe leaves this life with a legacy of unmatched service to God, his church and his community. The driving force of Joe’s faith led him to a stronger calling. He became an ordained Deacon on May 3, 1986. He served the parish of St. John the Evangelist in Center Moriches, NY until his move to Texas in 1988. Upon arriving in Waco, Texas, he joined the Baylor University Student Center as a pastoral advisor and also served the community of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Waco.

Bishop McCarthy had other plans for Joe after that. Seeing a need for a parish in China Spring, he asked Joe to begin a church and St. Philip Catholic Church was born with five parishioners. St. Philip now serves over 120 families.

Joe’s need to serve continued. With Pastor Allen of the China Spring United Methodist Church, they began the Meals on Wheels program for those in need in the area. Still fueled to do more, Joe then organized a discussion group to discuss the questions we all have regarding life and religion. He discovered a true love and passion with this group and spent much of his time during his last days researching and preparing for the fall session.

Because of Joe, we are left with faith, hope and love, the greatest of these being love. He Will Be Missed By All
